Inlays and Onlays in Dracut

person in dental chair during examWhen there’s a problem with your tooth, our dentist will give you several options to restore it to full function and appearance. Inlays and onlays are a more conservative approach to correct the problem. Both involve less cutting of the tooth structure, and are a more economical step between a traditional filling and a crown.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are often considered for individuals with decaying rear teeth, or teeth that aren’t quite damaged enough for a crown. When a regular filling is not an option, inlays may be used to fill a large area of decay outside the cusps of the tooth. The exact shape of the new filling is prepared in the lab and cemented in the tooth when received by our dentist.

Onlays are major single-tooth restoration options, used to fill larger areas of decay where inlays won’t work. Onlays cover one or more of the cusps of the damaged tooth. The deep cure filling, which is more durable than a regular filling, is created in the lab based on impressions taken by the dentist.

The Process

The process for inlays and onlays is similar to that for a crown. The first appointment is to prep the tooth by removing the cavity, shaping the area, and taking an impression to send to the lab. The lab molds one solid piece of composite using a heating process, producing an extremely durable product, perfect for molars.

Your second appointment is scheduled when the finished inlay or onlay arrives at Dadiala Family Dentistry. Your dentist inserts the molded appliance in the prepared area and cements it in place.

Inlays and onlays can last for many years with proper oral care. And they look so natural; no one even knows they’re not your real teeth!
